QC of geographic information

In most mapping project today the main goal of the project is not a printed or plotted map. Instead digital data must be prepared for upload to a spatial database. Users will download data for use in their GIS or web browser. Thus data has to be "GIS ready".

The quality demands for "GIS ready data" is much higher than for data used to produce printed maps.

QC of geographic data is undertaken based on international standards developed by ISO/TC 211, e.g.

  • ISO 19113 Geographic Information - Quality principles
  • ISO 19114 Geographic Information - Quality evaluation procedures.

Quality control is accomplished through automatic and manual control of quality elements defined in the ISO standards, e.g.:

  • Spatial characteristics

  • Completeness

  • Logical consistency

  • Thematic accuracy

  • Positional accuracy

Also refer to CRONO GIP details - Quality Control routines.

Details about ISO/TC 211 can be found at www.isotc211.org.

Quality Assurance Systems must follow ISO 9000.
